FWHOOSH!! WHAM! CLICK! Hahaha! I absolutely hated the idea of using sound effects in my comic until 20 minutes before this page went up on the net. I refrained from using SFX for so long because I didn’t want it to seem too “cartoony” but at the last minute I was like “whatever” and went ahead and added them. The main reason I did so was to make the MiB’s impact on the wall seem more believable. It looked terrible without some kind of “action word.” Meh, at least I’ll be able to sleep tonight.
Anyways…
This page… Yeah… Well, I’m going to be completely honest with you — I originally wanted there to be a huge revealing scene where the Narrator and company get completely surrounded by a number of MiB who slowly “decloak” around them one after another. The Narrator then goes on this awesome display of his power where he’s causing some of them to vanish into thin air, others to disintegrate into millions of particles, and even had some “wind” like abilities. This scene would have needed wire stunts to pull off, tons of practice and rehearsal and a…BUDGET. A real budget anyway. So now that you know why going from a live action pilot to a comic book was more feasible for me haha!
So instead of a group of six or seven MIB we get just one and instead of a kickass display of the Narrator’s fireworks we get his little “force push” that you see here lol. Originally, I was going to assign a color to some of his abilities but ultimately I decided that it should be colorless — hence why the ripples you’ve seen him make in the fabric of the universe not have a real color to it.
And what’s going on in the last panel??? Hmm…
Act 1 will be coming to a close soon! Only three pages left!
And please don’t forget to vote!

WHA! Awesome!
And I totally love the action words! I dunno why, but having them in a photocomic is just… neat. I really love it.
And the Narrator! I wish I had a better word for him, but I’m going to have to say awesome again!
This page is possibly the coolest yet!

don’t particularly care for the action words, particularly around the MiB (the others are less noticeable). I think it’s because I’d have liked some blurry motion tricks w/ transparency to get the effect of movement.
everyone’s a critic, eh? hope my thoughts help, in some way.

I will admit I went too far with the “click” lol. At that point I found it funny and just plain hilarious. I technically “finished” this page months ago but as I was working deeper into Act 2 I knew this page bothered me for some reason — firstly, I didn’t know how well the Narrator’s incredibly toned down show of power was going to be received and then there was…well, my laziness at adding any kind of effects at all! The print version will definitely have the force of impact issue resolved once and for all but for the online version’s canonical debut — this page will forever be known as the “Fun with SFX Page!” Haha!
I will admit though — as much as I want to refrain from using SFX as much as possible in this comic… “If” I do an explosion later on (or a few…) it would be pretty funny if I used “BA-THROOM!!” or even a “CISSSS-COOOOO!!” lol
“MI-A-KOOOO!!!!” lmao

Nice page.
I just wish there were some cracks in the wall behind the man in black when he slams into the wall. Just for that added “umph!”.

@ Chip: Damn! Haha, I never even thought of that! Thanks! That’s definitely going into the final copy! You should see how many post-it notes I’ve got in my “prototype” book of Act 1 of all the little tweaks here and there I’ve got to make. If you’re interested in “umph!” though definitely stay tuned to Act 3 — lots of planning and preparation is and has been going into giving you all a heavy hitting experience!
I also want to produce a “Making Of” DVD aside from the books themselves and that’s shaping up to be really cool too! The footage is great! ‘Cept for my fat ass from some of the older photoshoots, hahaha!

I loved the fwoosh and everything else.
I like the action words, personally.

*claps* I like Chips’ comment.
The click is better than the other ones, as it’s actually shown as well as told, imho –feels way less cartoony that way.
Also, I think I like the wavy thing rather than the plasma thing. Would be curious to see what “back off” looks like as more gravity waves type things, and less “plasma jets of DOOM!”
I agree, people shouting like TOS Star Trek is fun!
