Act II - Page 58
FSSHAAAMM!!!!
Hahaha, what’s Dakota doing with my late mother’s class of ‘83 high school ring!? Looks like there’s something “magical” about it don’t you think? Hmmm… I did mention there being a witch character as part of the original PHT cast. Could this witch have some kind of alliance with Dakota…? Okay, the answer is yes. Sheesh! This witch I speak of is named Hazel (clever, I know…) but she doesn’t make an appearance in Friends in High Places. I couldn’t make her fit unfortunately.
Hazel is kind of like Dakota’s unofficial side kick and one of the most powerful witches in the world. Except she’s relectant to follow in her family’s lineage of magic users.
This scene turned out to be one of my favorite scenes in Act 2 solely because it gives you all a better explanation of the type of world this comic exists in. The “Underworld” in this series is pretty damn cool. Stay tuned to learn more! And to figure out what the heck Dakota’s doing with that damn ring!
EASTER EGG ALERT: About half way through shooting the comic I got the either ingenious or stupid idea (take your pic) of hiding things in some of my shots. If you look at the fourth panel you’ll see that Dakota is holding… the script!!!! She knows how the comic ends!!! There are more subtle things hidden throughout the rest of the comic. I’ll be sure to point them out for your amusement.
By the way!
Casey Fontana (the girl that guy is talking about over the phone) is a character I always mention in my stories as this big chested girl who guys always swoon over. Her first “appearance” in one of my works was a play I wrote in high school about two gamers who join the gymnastics team to get a chance to look up her skirt. Casey Fontana will somehow make her way into all of my stories. Somehow. Haha!

The small panel 3 is a little distracting for the suspension of disbelief as it contains the script for the next page. Unless Dakota is used to writing out her self-ramblings, some photoshopping would seem to be in order.

@ friedkitty: Good eye! I was baffled however that you didn’t seem to know already that I put the script in there because I thought I had mentioned it already as it being an easter egg. When I checked the commentary I realized there was no mention whatsoever!!! I went back to the wordpress entry I wrote and saw that there was an autosave that wasn’t uploaded… *grumble* But yes, that’s an easter egg I hid in the comic. I’m a silly guy and you’re reading a silly comic that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I get on some of my colleagues nerves when it comes to how I go about things haha!
But if you’re curious as to how it got there in the first place I believe I mentioned earlier how I had to cut a lot of Dakota’s dialogue at the beginning of this scene. Originally she was referring to some documents she swiped from the Hidden Truth office about Art (which if readers payed attention would actually be the script, my easter egg). This scene is actually one page shorter with my cuts but had I not cut anything you would have seen more establishing shots of her looking at the fictitious documents. Panel 4 however had to say because it was the only establishing shot of the ring. For an official print version of Volume 2 (which is eons away) any gaffes will be fixed. Only the web readers get the fun stuff.
Hope I cleared that up for ya.
